Films and TV lie to us. We know that. Part of the appeal of watching these stories is pretending to be involved in a narrative where all serial killers leave taunting clues to their whereabouts for the police to find or that the saviour of the world just happens to live next door to the local fishmongers.
But as time goes by, our flights of fancy change. None moreso than the One Man Army trope that gave us such heroes as John McClane, Rambo and Liam Neeson in Taken. As time has gone on, it’s become harder to enjoy the thrills of one man slaughtering their way through hundreds of nameless, faceless goons to wreak vengeance upon the people who wronged him.
But that’s what you get when you watch the trailer for American Assassin.
The trailer looks to be the most generic piece of dross that has crossed my eyes for some time. Bland characters with a chip on their shoulder, generic Middle Eastern terrorist/drug runner bad guy, and lots of guns and explosions.
Change the record please. I want to dance to a different tune.
American Assassin is out in cinemas September 15th!
