Moonlight Wins Best Picture at 89th Academy Awards!

We were going to do a quick round-up of tonight’s Academy Awards. We were. We had seen a kinda predictable, still exciting, and somewhat disappointing Academy Awards with enough jokes, humour, and glitzy glamorous people to fill our Oscar appetite. And then it happened.

We’re not going to spend a lot of time mulling over the La La Land cock-up. The poor guys who created this film had to walk on stage, collect an award, be exhilarated for a moment  – only to find out that another film won and concede it over.

What we are going to do is say that we are DELIGHTED that Moonlight won Best Picture. Not only is it the best film out of the bunch with its original story-telling, complete emotional depth, and skilled performance crafting an exquisite film but it is a vital film too.

A black LGBT film was scooped up the coveted Academy Award gong. A fairly independent film with a predominantly black crew and cast with a story about a gay man has won. Now, imagine you are watching that on screen and you’re watching Barry Jenkins give an impassioned speech on the big screen with that glorious gold man in his hand telling you “to hell with dreams, this is reality.” Imagine being a young black boy or girl struggling with your identity or sexuality, and you see Moonlight win. Imagine knowing that voice has mirrored yours and the film industry can hear you. Imagine that.

That’s how important this Moonlight win is. Finally, some bridges have been crossed. It’s a big leap and there’s certainly a long way to go, but this is a defining moment for the Moonlight team.

Look, we can sum it all up but we’d rather bask in the Moonlight once more. Here’s the winner’s from last night’s Academy Awards: Did your favourite win?
