The horror anthology is a great way to give short films plenty of attention that they deserve. A great example of this is the V/H/S series, which uses “home movies” to tell different stories.
XX is a similar premise, albeit, one directed by a tremendous host of females, each with their own take on the horror genre. The trailer for this anthology shows snippets from each of the four films, and carries within each of them a palpable sensation of tension and fear, as they take some relatively mundane problems, and expand upon them in order to create some genuinely freaky shots.
This is the sort of series of films that creates a strong, positive buzz about the directing, storytelling and many more aspects of filmmaking, yet may not do quite so well when it comes to its release on the big screen.
Here’s hoping I’m wrong on that front!
