Finding your soulmate is a combination of effort and a whole lot of luck. But when you find that connection, not necessarily a romantic one, something amazing happens. Worlds collide and creativity flows back and forth between the two of you. Often other people don’t understand it. Sometimes you don’t either. But understanding it would make it less magical, right? That is the sort of bond we find between Timmy and John – BFFs.
When a young Johnny Depp walked into that coffee shop to meet Tim Burton for the first time, I doubt he realised the journey he was about to embark on. A friendship over twenty years strong sparked that day, from which we got collaborations such as Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, and the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Thank God those two found each other.
But then it seems inevitable when you hear them talk. Who else but Johnny could understand and help bring to life some of Tim’s more abstract ideas? Who else but Tim could bring out the best acting in Johnny, even when faced with impossible roles? Under Tim’s wing he played teenager made of corpses with scissors for hands – and became a successful movie star off the back of it! I once stuck pencils in between my fingers at school and pretended to be Wolverine. Maybe if I had had a friend like Tim that could have been the start of my greatness?
So this is a just a little celebration of that awesome friendship. May it go on for many more years guys and produce many more films
