Rape is perhaps the most sensitive subject to convey in film. After all, the traumatic experience is often the most misunderstood and controversial, with victim’s voices being subjected repeatedly to scorn and disbelief. For years, rape had two reasons to appear in movies – a shocking wow factor in horror films or an exploration of how it would tear a victim apart. It looks as though Paul Verhoeven is tackling both with Elle.
Starring Isabelle Huppert, the film revolves around videogame designer who is raped in her home. As she carries on with her life, however, she decides to hunt down the perpetrator and make him pay…
Similar sentiments to thrillers such as Ms. 45 and I Spit on Your Grave, Elle caused a heated discussion at this year’s Cannes. The main objective that Elle would have to achieve is to make the titular and her trauma rounded and explore perhaps a darker element of a survivor’s road to recovery.
I’d say this is the most interesting upcoming film yet.
Elle has no official release date!
