There is a fine line between capturing hardship and the folks who help and puffing out your chest screaming; “Look at all serious issues we’re trying to combat here” when really your patting yourself on the back with a shit-eating grin, doing nothing at all.
Same Kind of Different As Me, the award winner for the most convoluted title, tells the story of a couple who work in a homeless shelter and help one of its more aggressive customers.
Holy shit this is all kinds of goddamn cheesy. And very white. It’s like a Lifetime special that grew legs and found a home on the big screen. It’s one of those movies that’ll aim for the Oscars but fall short because of its over-sentimentality. Even the trailer has awful lines such as “I hung out with a homeless man today…it was kind of incredible,” as though we were supposed to applaud them for treating a human being with basic humanity and “That’s the man from my dream” populate this over-bearing and over-emotional film.
It stars Renee Zellweger, Greg Kinear, Jon Voight, and Djimon Hounsou, if that’s anything and it’s also based on a true story.
Still, it looks pretty naff!
