BFI London Film Festival is one of my favourite times of the year. Even if I only get to watch one major film, I’ll be trembling out of excitement for it. Film festivals are always so wonderful, diverse, and richly celebrated that it’s hard not to fall in love with the hustle and bustle of film obsessives pouring into these spectacular festivals.
However, between Toronto International Film Festival and Venice, London just has a special spark about it. And this year looks to be its best yet.
Already announced on the roster is Aman Amarte’s A United Kingdom and Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire as Opening and Closing Gala films respectively. Taking the American Express Gala film is Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, and Dev Patel led drama Lion. The film revolves around the true story of a couple who take in an Indian boy who is later adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty five years later, haunted by the memories of his family, he uses Google Earth to track them down.
BFI London Film Festival Director, Clare Stewart says:
“We are delighted Garth Davis’ Lion will be this year’s American Express Gala. This sweeping adaptation is a rousing tribute to the tenacity of the human spirit, and is more intricate in its texture, and more astounding in its narrative twists than most works of fiction.”
