It seems as if the treats from this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con just keep coming. As if Wonder Woman, Justice League, Fantastic Beasts, and Dr Strange were not enough the first series four trailer for Sherlock is now with us.
The modern take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyles detective series starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Mark Gatiss, Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs and Louise Brealey will air three feature length new episodes in 2017.
Early reports suggested that series four would be taking a much darker route than it previously had and the trailer seems to confirm this. It begins with Sherlock’s nemesis Moriarty asking ‘did you miss me’. This picks up from the end of season three with Sherlock being pardoned for his crimes and returning home to deal with the supposed return of the master criminal. But is Moriarty really back and can audience look forward to more of Andrew Scott’s psychotic antics?
Sherlock himself declares something is coming. The trailer also gives us our first look of Toby Jones’s unknown villain. Jones is playing a villain from Sherlock lore but who he is remains to be seen. He appears in confrontation with both Sherlock and John declaring ‘we’re going to have endless fun, aren’t we?” His sinister laugh also marks the trailer.
Images of doctors and Watson standing over a hospital bed reoccur throughout the trailer leading audiences to ponder the absence of his wife Mary played by Amanda Abbington. Will she meet the same tragic fate as she does in the books?
Una Stubbs’ Mrs Hudson makes a small appearance as she declares Mycroft Holmes a reptile and demands he leaves her house. The rest of the trailer is action packed with images of guns, fights, helicopters, and more.
The trailer is electric and looks to continue the excitement, action, and character development of previous episodes, and single special The Abominable Bride. As if Sherlock’s impatient fans (I can judge I am one of them) were not excited enough this trailer means 2017 really cannot come fast enough.
