It might be because of the somewhat volatile political climate, the constant fear of climate change and the rise of extremist groups proliferated through the internet, but the madcap world of the post-apocalypse seems to make more and more sense the longer I think about it.

The first trailer for The Bad Batch tells yet another story based in a world where society has collapsed and groups of survivors have resorted to cannibalism in order to survive. Despite the well-trodden backstory, the film looks to tell a very vibrant and hyper-surreal story as numerous muscular shirtless men (and Keanu Reeves in a fully-clothed role) both chase and train Suki Waterhouse’s protagonist in the Texan desert.

The slowly building synth soundtrack helps underlie the tension as we are subjected to numerous scenes of a muted violent nature.

It’s too early to tell if this film will be a fantastic watch or just a damp squib, but the trailer is intriguing enough to warrant following the film’s trajectory.
