Director Charlie McDowell has a strangely unique vision. His first film The One I Love took a fairly mundane premise, and then injected it with science fiction, and his latest film, The Discovery, appears to be following in the same vein.
The premise revolves around the scientific discovery of the afterlife, and the number of people killing themselves in order to reach it that little bit sooner.
The majority of the trailer is a musical montage set to Roy Orbison’s Only the Lonely and features a lot of long shots showing bleak, empty landscapes to help suggest the isolation that comes with mass depopulation, but also carries a quietly understated romance between Jason Segel and Rooney Mara as they come to terms with their lives.
The Discovery looks to be a fascinating and unique film, with an awesome cast. While some may think it’s pretentious, there is a wonderfully subtle quality to the whole affair.
The Discovery is out on Netflix March 31st!
