BAFTA Highlights

A new year, a new you and as always BAFTA have kicked off 2017 with a whole host of events and highlights to keeps all film and TV lovers entertainment. Open to the public and held in London or Glasgow, all information regarding their impressive list of events can be found through their website and social media channels. Here we go over what is happening this January.

TV Preview: Fortitude + Q&A

Thursday 12 January 2017 – 18.30 CCA, Glasgow

The special events and previews kick off on Thursday January 12th with a preview and Q&A of the hit Sky Atlantic drama Fortitude. The 12 episode season one drama is set in the fictional Norwegian town of Fortitude in artic territory. Following the investigation of a violent murder inside the small knit community, Sherriff Dan Anderson (Richard Dormer), must find out who is responsible. The show also stars Sofie Gråbøl, Darren Boyd with appearances from Stanley Tucci and Michael Gambon. To celebrate the shows second series, which will air from the 26th of January on Sky Atlantic, writer and creator Simon Donald will talk about the show’s success, what we have in store for series two and will also answer audience member’s questions.

TV Preview: The Cult Next Door + Q&A

A new documentary, soon to be shown on the BBC, uncovers the hidden world of a secret cult right here in London. The story began when three women emerged from a small flat in Brixton after decades in captivity. Yet the full story goes back to the 1970’s when a young student, Aravindan Balakrishnan, created a sect belief group that followed the strict teachings of China’s General Mao. The documentary, by acclaimed filmmaker Vanessa Engle, uncovers the full atrocities of the Maoist cult and interviews those held in captivity. The film will be previewed and followed by a Q&A with director Engle as well as editor Paul Carlin.

A Life in Pictures: Viola Davis

The BAFTA nominated, Emmy Award winning actress, producer, and all around inspiration that is Viola Davis will be speaking about her career in film, TV and theatre this month. For anyone who has watched a Miss Davis award speech or interview, this is a real treat to see one of the most talented, versatile and articulate actresses working today in person. She will talk about her most famous credits including Doubt, The Help, How to Get Away with Murder as well as the upcoming Fences with Denzel Washington.

 

The Replacement + Q&A

Wednesday 18 January 2017 – 18.30 Grosvenor Cinema, Glasgow

The Replacement, airing on BBC at a later date, follows the life of Ellen, Morven Christie (The A Word), a successful mid-thirties architect who must find maternity cover when she falls pregnant. She finds the perfect candidate in Paula, Vicky McClure (This is England) but slowly begins to suspect she has sinister motives. Yet are her suspicions female rivalry or her reluctance to leave the working world behind? The new psychological thriller will screen with a Q&A by writer, director Joe Ahearne (Doctor Who) and cast members.

Breakfast with Specialist Factual Commissioners

Monday 23 January 2017 – 8.30 BAFTA 195 Piccadilly

Specialist factual commissioners from a range of broadcasters explain their commissioning strategies and talk through the opportunities for producers. BAFTA has long since been holding seminars and events where those in the industry can get advice and possibly meet those in the know. So come along you budding producers and mingle with the best.

The disappearance of young school girl Shannon Matthews gripped the nation. In the short time she was gone her family appeared on television to plead for her safe return and it seemed everyone’s prayers had been answered when she was found alive and well. Yet what followed was the depraved story of a mother’s greed and exploitation of her own child to gain reward money. The BBC’s new two-part drama about the search for the missing Yorkshire schoolgirl in 2008. Followed by a Q&A with writer Neil McKay and executive producer Jeff Pope.
