Bryan Cranston and James Franco hit cinemas this boxing day with their new comedy, Why Him?, about an overprotective father (Cranston) who finds out that his daughter (Zoey Deutch) is dating an crude, obnoxious, overbearing internet billionaire (Franco), and it’s a long way to go before this new boyfriend has any chance of getting Dad’s approval. We have some new clips and a featurette for next week’s release.
In the first clip “Perve”, Ned and Barb (Megan Mullally) are bewildered at Laird’s house AI interface, voiced by Kaley Cuoco, and question the privacy they have with this thing active. In the second clip “Check In”, Laird enters Barb and Ned’s bedroom after an awkward dinner argument to apologise and make sure they’re okay, whilst soaking wet after having a shower with Stephanie. What’s confusing is that these two clips look like they’re from the same scene, as in, same costumes, same setting, same everything, but they don’t look like they could connect in anyway. Both clips leave no room for the other one to be involved. In the featurette, Gustav (Keegan Michael-Key) gives us a tour of Laird’s mansion.
Why Him? could be a serviceable if forgettable comedy, though I doubt anyone is rushing out to see it.
