There is always a case of conflicting emotions when a nostalgic brand resurfaces to try and take a fresh bite out of a new audience. On the one hand, you want to appease the old fans by getting their bums back in the seats and reminding them of the halcyon days where they were younger. On the other, you also need to make sure that the younger, hipper audience you’re courting enjoys what you’re selling enough that they’ll return for every sequel you churn out.
The latest trailers for the Baywatch reboot appear to be attempting to straddle both, with mixed results. As a whole, the comedy and action both encompass the spirit of the original series, but, at the same time, there seems to be a certain level of aping films such as 21 Jump Street or The Other Guys in the semblance of the two likably moronic protagonists getting in over their heads whilst trying to solve a crime and bring down a criminal mastermind.
Whether this is going to be successful or not remains to be seen. It sure looks like it will be one of the more easy-going films of 2017.
Baywatch is out May 19th!
