The sound of sawing wood and fence posts being struck permeates the backing track of the first official trailer for Fences, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.
Set in the 1950s, the trailer takes a look at race in America as Washington’s father figure puts his all into raising his family in a very turbulent time. Set to the beat of the sawing wood and a series of quick cuts showing various dramatic scenes that look set to be charged with lots of emotional tension, there is a distinctly powerful wave of potential acting prowess that seeps from every pore of the trailer.
Washington’s fourth turn in the director’s chair looks set to be one of the most powerful films of the year, and with such a strong cast, it’s bound to attract the critic’s praise. The only real question is, how will it fare come awards season?
Fences is out in cinemas December 25th.
