Will Smith is a great actor. In fact, one of the best. He has the ability to flow from comedy to tragedy seamlessly and yet, most times, can combine the two. Here, in Collateral Beauty, it seems he is spinning with aching tragedy.

The film revolves around Howard, a man who recently lost his daughter. Whilst he attends therapy and tries to gain back his life, he falls further into depression with his friends trying desperately to reach him. To help get through his grief, he wind up writing letters to Death, Time, and Love. Only, they happen to come to life to guide him…

Truly a Christmas film (ghosts, snow, loss – Dickens would be joyous,) Collateral Beauty has to use the talents of Smith, Helen Mirren, Michael Pena, Keira Knightley, and more to pull itself out of a hammy premise.
