Let’s be honest, Hollywood’s adaptations of Godzilla have lacked a certain je ne sais quoi that the kaiju’s homeland have been using in abundance since the mutated lizards first outing, and while the 2014 film garnered somewhat positive criticism, it doesn’t hold a candle to its Toho produced counterparts, not least Godzilla Resurgence, their latest outing.
The latest trailer for Resurgence (or, to use its official nomenclature, Shin Godzilla) appears to do away with a large part of the special effects, choosing instead to focus more upon the various stories of those affected by Godzilla, using a variety of styles to denote different characters and locations, ranging from civilians caught up in the crowds trying to evacuate to the Japanese government and military formulating plans to deal with the situation.
The special effects in the trailer are evocative of the numerous kaiju films of yore, with brief glimpses of what looks to be Godzilla in a rubber suit to add to the conventions. Though that could admittedly be my own very blinkered view of the genre.
Godzilla Resurgence is out in America October 11th.
